Upcoming Festivals in Philadelphia 2010!
West Oak Lane Jazz Festival, June 18th-20th 2010
In its seventh year, the 2010 West Oak Lane Jazz Festival features three
days of non-stop music on four outdoor stages. Performers at the 2009 festival
included WAR, the Average White Band, the Mingus Big
Band, Bill Paul, Ron Ayers and Tower of Power. Don’t miss the Vendor
Village, which features African-inspired crafts, will complement the music
— along with a food court and other family-friendly activities like face
and body painting. This year, the
all jazz line-up has been programmed around a New Orleans theme. The event will
kick off with a festive New Orleans-style parade led by The Royal Brass Band.
That’ll be followed by acts such as The Dirty Dozen Brass Band,
Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Diane Reeves, David
Sanborn with Joey De Francesco, Al Jarreau and the
George Duke Trio. Festival is free
and open to all!
*The festival effectively shuts down the entire neighborhood of West Oak
Lane. Consider taking Septa or the free shuttle.
**Free shuttle buses will transport festival attendees from the
Independence Visitor Center (6th and Market Streets) to the festival.
Odunde Festival, June 11th-13th
2010
One of the largest and most longstanding African-American street festivals
in the nation!
Take in the sights, sounds and smells: the rhythmic, thumping beat of the
drums, the colorful, never-ending array of African textiles and crafts mix, and
the tantalizing smell of African spices cooking on an outdoor grill. The annual
Odunde Street Festival, held every second Sunday in
June, brings a genuine taste of Africa to South Street and one of
Philadelphia’s oldest, historically African-American neighborhoods. The
festival begins with a procession to the Schuylkill River, where prayers are
offered and blessings bestowed. The procession then returns to 23rd and South
Streets for the start of the street festival.
*Festival streets will be closed to traffic and parking, so consider taking
public transportation.
**Odunde is a Yoruba word that means “Happy
New Year.” Every year, Odunde draws vendors
from not only America but from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Guinea.
***3-day abundance of cultural, historical and family-friendly events.

Philadelphia
Mural Arts Program: has been involved in more
than 2,400 indoor and outdoor mural projects-making Philadelphia home to the
largest collection of public murals in the country. Established in 1984 as part
of a citywide anti-graffiti initiative, MAP initially worked with young,
adjudicated graffiti writers, redirecting their artistic energies into making
art that would enhance, rather than undermine their communities. Since then,
the program has grown steadily, reaching out to an ever-widening sphere of
young people and producing increasingly more accomplished works of public
art..."
